Drew Bennett’s The River Laughs While the Sky Cries examines the relationship between the human body and nature. Bennett’s contemporary aesthetic combines traditions of romance landscape painting with interpretations of photographs and memories.

There is an underlying tension to being in nature. In the same moment, one can be awestruck yet quite literally fall off the trail. Bennett’s work invites the viewer to get lost in the world around them. The paintings contain autobiographical elements of adventures into the land yet leave space for the viewer to imagine their own journey. Bennett’s dynamic layers are rich with merging colors, his subjects intertwining and sometimes completely obscured in the scenery.

The artist’s deep connection to the wilderness is partially inspired by the Naturalists, a group of Bay Area creatives who venture out on back-to-the-land experiences. In a time when the forces in the natural world can drastically alter human life, Bennett’s work aims to re-center nature’s sublime essence as an all-powerful and constant force of good.

Drew Bennett, Old Oak (Dark History Dance), 2020. Oil on mahogany veneered plywood. 88 x 50 in.

About the artist

Drew Bennett (b. 1981, Chicago, IL) is an Oakland-based artist. He graduated from Colorado College in 2004 (BA, Fine Arts). Bennett moved to San Francisco in 2005 where he exhibited painting, installation and social practice work as well as developed his own business as a designer and builder. In 2012, Bennett founded FB AIR, Facebook’s artist in residency program. Between 2012 and 2018, Bennett grew the program from a headquarters-based residency experience to an international site-specific installation program commissioning hundreds of new works annually. In 2015, Bennett co-founded Starline Social Club (Oakland) with Adam Hatch and Sam White.  Now resigned from his roles at Facebook and Starline, is dedicated to his art and family.

About the gallery

Founded in 2009, Ever Gold [Projects] exhibits emerging and mid-career artists. Originally located in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood in a space formerly occupied by a pawn shop/gold teeth fabricator, Ever Gold Gallery was an artist run project space, which transitioned into a commercial gallery in January 2013.

In January 2016, the gallery was renamed Ever Gold [Projects] to indicate a shift towards longer and more internationally focused exhibitions and projects. While the focus of the gallery has always been contemporary emerging and mid-career American artists working in a wide range of media, Ever Gold [Projects] has developed a few consistent directions in its programming: an international focus on emerging art, and a historically-leaning interest in the avant garde (past exhibitions include Takis, Jay DeFeo, Roy de Forest, Kazuo Shiraga, and a Gutai survey).

Ever Gold [Projects] is now located in the main Minnesota Street Project building in the Dogpatch—San Francisco’s new and rapidly evolving arts district. Ever Gold [Projects] is owned and directed by founder Andrew McClintock.
