The World According to Sound presents Outside In | Solitude

Thursday, January 28, 2021 | 6 pm PST / 9 PM EST

Beginning December 10, The World According to Sound will stream spatialized audio directly to your headphones with countless others around the world. Each program is a completely unique, one-time event never to be heard again.

Attendees are mailed an eye mask and listening instructions for how to tune in. The programs are followed by a live discussion with the producers, musicians, and sound artists who brought the audio to life.

Outside In | Solitude

Solitude can be refreshing, isolating, even boring. This program is a listening session of seclusion. Hear from a lonely goalkeeper to a man sitting in his car amongst a field of cows in a 1940s radio play. Hop a train winding up into Canada’s frozen north and trek deep inside the fjords and glaciers of the Scandinavian Arctic Circle.

The World According to Sound

Created by radio sound engineer Chris Hoff and reporter Sam Harnett, The World According to Sound began as a weekly radio show that’s evolved into a series of communal listening events. Hoff and Harnett harness free-flow sound rather than narrative and language, inviting listeners to get lost in the auditory expanse.

The World According to Sound has been featured on NPR’s “All Things Considered,” NHPR’s “Overheard,” and KQED’s “Earful.”
